AEROPLAS project aims to develop a new manufacturing process for thermoplastic matrix composite materials using low-cost technologies for the aeronautical industry. The initiative arises from the need to incorporate in this industry solutions that are lighter, more environmentally sustainable and at a lower cost through the use of thermoplastic materials, instead of thermostable composites. This requires the development of new production processes and adapted tools, efficient from an energy and economic point of view.
AEROPLAS will be able to develop a 50% more efficient process for the thermoforming of thermoplastic matrix composite material parts of continuous fiber (compared to those for the manufacture of aeronautical parts of thermostable composite material manufactured by autoclave). In addition, it will manufacture an intelligent mould with an embedded monitoring system for the development of a more robust process for thermoforming 3D components in thermoplastic composite.
Regarding the components in thermoplastic composite material that will be obtained, these will be 5% lighter than those manufactured in thermostable strategy, 100% recyclable and 15% cheaper, based on the implementation of analysis models and the monitoring of the thermoforming process.
As a consequence, thanks to this development, tooling costs will be reduced by 50% and energy costs derived from the use of non-autoclave manufacturing processes and the great durability of thermoplastics at ambient temperature will be reduced by 35%. The emission of volatile organic compounds will be reduced by 100% and waste material by 40%.
AIMEN will provide its background in thermoplastic matrix composites, advising on the selection of materials, characterizing the new materials, actively participating in the optimization of the manufacturing process, as well as in the integration of sensors and tuning of smart moulds.
