Smart and dynamic beam shaping for laser welding applications

  • Start: 01/10/2024
  • End: 30/04/2027

The BEAMSHAPE project aims to develop a dynamic beam shaping device for laser Multi Plane Light Conversor (MPLC), designed to modify high-power laser beams (multi-kW) for customized welding and processing of difficult-to-weld metals such as copper and aluminum, materials commonly used in the e-mobility sector.

This device stands out for its ability to integrate with any existing fiber-guided laser source. Additionally, it is enhanced by real-time monitoring using infrared (IR) imaging and a digital platform that provides data analysis services based on artificial intelligence (AI). The system correlates process stability, defect generation, and process parameters, supporting e-mobility component manufacturers in implementing optimized and zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) strategies, particularly for critical components such as busbars in electric vehicle batteries.

The beam shaping capability enables precise control over energy distribution, stabilizing the molten pool dynamics and expanding the processing window, thereby improving both process performance and component quality across a variety of applications.
