New solutions of nanoreforzed elastomeric composites for conveying bands with high temperature, abrasion and tearing requirements

  • Start: 01/03/2018
  • End: 30/09/2020

The main objective of BERTA is to investigate new solutions of nano-reinforced elastomeric composites with high mechanical characteristics in the temperature range from 200 ° C to 250 ° C, abrasion resistance greater than 40 mm3, and resistance to tear greater than 80 KN / m, for their use in the manufacture of new coating layers of solid material conveyor belts. To this end, advanced technologies based on fiber optic embedded sensors will be incorporated to monitor the temperature and pressure parameters in the calendering and vulcanizing process, ensuring the surface quality of the layers and the optimum curing of the new elastomeric nanocomposites. The resistance to temperature, abrasion and tearing by impact of the new coating layers will be evaluated by means of a multipurpose equipment for prototype strip testing under relevant conditions, as well as in real conditions, in a stone processing plant.

AIMEN will be responsible for carrying out the following activities:
• development of rubber blends based on conventional rubber mixtures (EPDM) with fluorinated rubbers (FKM / FFKM)
• study and selection of nanoreinforcements for elastomeric composites. Study of the homogeneity of the dispersions of the nanofillers in elastomeric matrices and evaluation of the percentage of nano-charges embedded in the matrix to achieve a rubber band with ameliorated properties.
• design of the FBG sensor architecture to be integrated in which pressure and temperature will be monitored in calendering and vulcanizing processes of the new nanocomposites.
• selection of suitable percentages and optimized processing conditions for the manufacturing of the coating prototype layers.
