Micropollutants are a kind of substances of anthropogenic origin occurring in wastewater which conventional treatments cannot remove. Advanced oxidation processes, such as ozonation, can eliminate them. However, its implementation as a tertiary treatment is limited due to its operation and maintenance costs. Currently, monitoring of micropollutants is based on analysis in specialized laboratories that require specific equipment and trained personnel for their use and interpretation of the data. In addition, they do not allow in-line results to act on the treatments.
SENSO3 project aims at improve the performance of the ozonation units in terms of energy and removal of micropollutants by means of a bioosensor based on HEATSENS® technology.
The measures provided by this sensor will allow the design and implementation of a control strategy that will reduce O&M costs while allowing a correct monitoring of its activity from the SCADA of the WWTP. SENSO3 System will consist of an ozonation pilot unit that will incorporate a process control system and a modular measurement system (automatic sampling + biosensor) to monitor the presence of a representative microcontaminant such as the pesticide diuron. SENSO3 system can be used in the environmental sector as a tertiary treatment in WWTP, and the modular measurement system and functionalized biosensors for specific substances in biotechnology industry (food, bioprocesses or pharma) or in laboratories for monitoring compounds.
AIMEN Technology Centre will collaborate in the development of the ozonation treatment for diuron removal and in the development of the opto-electronics for the biosensor.
