The “Joint Venture Research Units” are a tool promoted by Galician Government through the Galician Innovation Agency in order to promote closer ties between industry and technology, setting joint working groups between technology centers and companies for the development of high impact R&D projects.
In this context, JOINTS 4.0 arises, formed between GKN Driveline Vigo S.A. and AIMEN Technology Centre. The main objective is to develop new technologies for sustainable production, primarily oriented to the automotive sector, but with medium to long term applicability to other sectors, and, in general to other industrial processes in which the control and monitoring are needed.
The main objectives of the Unit are:
- Development of new technologies for sustainable manufacturing and high performance transmission components for the automotive industry.
- Improve manufacturing processes and generation of new knowledge creating a solid technology foundation that will directly impact on the quality of the manufactured products, on the competitiveness and on the sustainability of GKN Vigo.
- Answer to current requirements of the automotive sector (short batches and flexible manufacturing processes), tending towards the so-called "Smart Manufacturing".
- Remove the concepts of inefficiency, defects and downtime.
- Focus towards RIS3 Galician and EU framework in this area (Factories of the future -FoF), and its vision for the strategy "Industry 4.0".
