Innovative hybrid INTensive – EXTensive resource recovery from wastewater in small communities

  • Start: 01/07/2019
  • End: 30/06/2023

Main goal: LIFE INTEXT aims to develop innovative solutions based on a combination of INTensive and EXTensive technologies for dealing with wastewater treatment and reuse to tackle water scarcity in small communities, benefiting from the advantages that both types of technologies provide. It will also provide a smart monitoring and evaluation system for consistent operation of the technologies and criteria for supporting the decision-making process of operators real-time.

Expected results:
1. Two innovation spaces will be prepared under two different climate conditions for hosting and validating different INTEXT technologies that will a) promote low carbon wastewater treatment (innovative high rate algal ponds, constructed wetlands and helophytes in flotation), b) produce valuable products (water reuse through solar-driven disinfection and an autonomous smart irrigation system, P and N recovery and energy production) and c) remove emerging pollutants.
2. To provide criteria for supporting the decision-making process for the identification of the most appropriate INTEXT technologies.
3. To foster market uptake and implementation of innovative technologies by the water sector (stardardization, environmental technology verification -EVT- and dissemination of the project solutions).

Role of AIMEN:
- Design, implementation and validation of a hydrolytic anaerobic wastewater treatment system.
- Design, implementation and validation of sludge treatment wetlands.
- Monitoring of emerging pollutant and toxicity removal.
- Important role within the transferability of project results when licensing, training and providing services to industry based on knowledge gained within the project.
