Green and Nature-Based Solutions for climate change-resilient waste infrastructures

  • Start: 01/07/2021
  • End: 31/12/2025

GREEN ADAPT aims to increase the resilience of EU waste management infrastructures, particularly landfills, which are vulnerable to pollution from extreme weather events. The project focuses on demonstrating the potential of blue-green infrastructures (BGI) and ecosystem-based approaches to mitigate these risks.

GREEN ADAPT will demonstrate the capacity of BGI to manage flash floods and runoff caused by heavy rainfall, as well as to prevent fires and explosions caused by droughts and heatwaves. Key objectives include:

· Demonstrating an innovative and replicable BGI approach: At the XILOGA landfill site (Spain), the project will implement large-scale treatment wetlands (TW) to improve resilience and climate adaptation capacity.
· Reducing the risk of landslides: Bio-technosoils will be used for soil stabilization and amendment in a circular approach to mitigate landfill landslides associated with floods and extreme rainfall.
· Efficiently managing green areas: Improving water retention and infiltration capacity will reduce water consumption and stormwater runoff from landfill covers.
· Treating and reusing leachate and landfill runoff: The TW will treat leachate and contaminated runoff, and the treated water will be reused for irrigation and to mitigate the effects of high temperatures, preventing fires and explosions, with the aim of achieving a zero-rainwater waste infrastructure highly resistant to flooding.
· Avoiding external treatment of contaminated runoff: On-site treatment will allow water reuse and controlled discharge of excess treated water into natural water bodies, mitigating the effects of drought in water-scarce regions.
· Improving the knowledge base for adaptation: A common methodology will be developed to assess and monitor adaptation actions at landfills in four EU climate risk areas (Atlantic, Continental, Mountain, and Mediterranean).
· Boosting the implementation of adaptation measures: Knowledge transfer and dissemination will be directed at identified stakeholders throughout the EU to promote the implementation of climate change adaptation measures in line with EU policies.

The project aligns with and contributes to various EU initiatives, including the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, the Green Deal Communication, the EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, and the Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe.
