The main objective of the LIGHTRANS project is to design and manufacture lightweight structures through the development of optimized and low cost manufacturing and joining processes for its application in eco-efficient road transport vehicles. This will be achieved by optimizing the properties of the new materials using them selectively in the structure, such as the manufacturing processes of the components, minimizing the number of operations, the use of molds and tools, as well as eliminating critical operations such as welding, that implies an increase of weight and generate a series of thermal distortions harmful for the assembly of the complete structure. In addition, with the solutions developed in LIGHTRANS, the aim is to match or even improve the mechanical performance of the main actual structures of a bus and an electric three-wheeled vehicle, reducing their total weight in both cases and achieving, ultimately, two means of transport more efficient. it is intended to combine, strategically and in certain elements, materials of different nature (thermoset and thermoplastic composite materials, cellular polymers and steel) in such a way that the weight, mechanical properties but also the cost will be optimmized. As a result two new products will be obtained; on the one hand a lightened structure of 100% electric motorcycle and on the other the superstructure of an eco-efficient bus.
The role of AIMEN will focus, essentially, on the design, manufacture and characterization of composite components, as well as the study of dissimilar joints and the optimization of manufacturing processes.
