Materials and technologies for performance improvement of cooling systems in power plants

  • Start: 01/03/2016
  • End: 28/02/2020

MATChING focuses on selection and demonstration of technological solutions to improve the performance of cooling systems for geothermal and fossil fuelled power plants, by the use of new nano-technologies and advanced materials, and aimed at reducing the overall amount of fresh water abstraction.
The project objectives are: to reduce evaporative losses and plume visibility, to increase the robustness of cooling equipments to allow the use of non-traditional waters, to increase the heat exchange efficiency of condenser, to decrease the water consumption, and promote the use of alternative water sources through advanced treatments.
MATChING will provide different technological solutions for new power plants as well as retrofit options for existing plants including an extensive demonstration phase, during which the technologies will be tested in pilot plants.
MATChING´s consortium is composed by 16 complementary participants, including knowledge centres, SMEs, system integrators and End Users. AIMEN will be responsible of corrosion phenomena evaluation of selected coating/steel combinations in the testing facilities, laser surface treatment of materials to increase thermal performance of tubes at the condenser, and characterization of biocide behavior of materials by using of electrochemical techniques to identify optimal alloys with bactericide effects for non-traditional waters and to monitor corrosion behavior of selected coating/steel combinations in the testing facilities.
