New self-heating and sensorized reconfigurable modular mold solution for the manufacturting of composite structures using one-shot out-of-autoclave processes

  • Start: 01/10/2024
  • End: 30/09/2027

ModuLAM aims to develop a new sustainable solution for a reconfigurable modular mold, self-heating with adjustable multi-zone heating, and sensorized, for the manufacturing of structural composite components using one-shot infusion and OoA processes.

The technologies to be developed are the following:
- Melt-mixing technology to obtain new thermoplastic polymer filaments for the self-heating system and resistance welding.
- Additive manufacturing technology based on fused filament deposition for the production of self-heating modular elements and the integration of resistive inserts.
- Resistance welding technology to enable assembly and subsequent disassembly.

The new ModuLAM solution will enable:
- Reduction in manufacturing times and costs of molds and structural composite components.
- Introduction of new circularity concepts based on the reuse of current molds.
- Increased flexibility and circularity of molds through the introduction of modularity and module reconfiguration concepts.
- Monitoring of the one-shot infusion process through the integration of sensors into the surface of the metal mold.
- Construction of a prototype mold capable of performing the one-shot OoA infusion process for structural aerospace composite components.
