Multifunctional automation system for Fuselage Assembly Line

  • Start: 01/03/2019
  • End: 28/02/2022

The main objective of MultiFAL project is to design, develop and construct an automated plant system for joining thermoplastic fuselage, longitudinal and circumferential joints, taking into account the existing assembly plant. The limited (in space and weight) double-sided accessibility will be accomplished by a set of technological automation solutions, like cooperating robots, lightweight robotics, synchronisation of tools via master controller, multi-robot scenarios and inside-outside referencing technologies.
MultiFAL will consider automation and virtual commissioning technologies in order to bring both an increase in the assembly process performance and a deep understanding of the relevant factors implementing a full size automated plant following a brownfield approach. The consortium will be led by CT INGENIEROS AERONAÚTICOS DE AUTOMOCIÓN E INDUSTRIALES (CTI), world manufacturing engineer supplier for Airbus; FFT Produktionssysteme GmbH & Co. KG (FFT), reputed manufacture company for industrial automation and AIMEN (AIM), an european referent research center in thermoplastic welding and laser technologies.

To demonstrate the feasibility of industrialization of thermoplastic components in aerospace applications by using welding process for the fuselage shells, AIMEN will work closely with CTI, employing their facilities for the set up, preliminary tests, optimization and final validation phases.
AIMEN´s role on the project: AIMEN will lead the tasks involving thermoplastic fuselage shells joining:
- Integration and modification of thermoplastic welding technology.
- Full scale automated welding process.
- Final test of joining processes.
- Investigation on joining accuracy and reproducibility.
