The main objective of Newslag is the design of new applications by the introduction of LD slag within the raw material supply cycle thus, according to the circular economy model, the material will be used as a base, substrate and precursor in relevant applications for other sectors. In particular, LD slag-based products will be designed for the creation, on the one hand, of forest and ornamental plant substrates, regeneration activities and restoration of degraded environments and, on the other hand, for the manufacture of geopolymers for civil use. Furthermore, to increase the applicability of this material, it is intended to improve its characteristics during the steelmaking process itself, so the slag will be considered a product during manufacturing process.
The project consortium comprised organizations with extensive expertise in the different aspects of the project: ArcelorMittal Spain (steel company, material producer), COPASA (construction), Arboris (gardening), Univ. of Oviedo, involved in the improvement of steelmaking processes, sustainability and soils preparation and AIMEN, centre with high specialization in the field of materials. Particularly, AIMEN will focus on the design and development of new sustainable and efficient materials based on the geopolimerization of LD slag, for its application in civil engineering as a substitute for conventional concrete.
