Potential and validation of sustainable natural & advance technologies for water & wastewater treatment, monitoring and safe water reuse in India

  • Start: 01/02/2019
  • End: 31/01/2023

Main objective: The main aim of this project is to validate, deploy and develop cost-effective & sustainable solutions to tackle water challenges and ensure the provision of safe water reuse, rejuvenate water quality of rivers, and restore ecosystems in India.
This will be achieved by deploying & developing water / wastewater technologies, and use of sensors for emerging and conventional contaminants. Further, it also aims to develop new management & planning strategies and enable better monitoring of pollution levels in real-time modes.

Expected results: This will be achieved by deploying & developing water/wastewater technologies, and use of sensors for emerging and traditional contaminants. It also aims to develop new management & planning strategies and enable better monitoring of pollution levels in real-time modes. Beside the technical aspects, research will also cover financial, environmental and institutional sustainability of those systems in order to develop and bring to the market a cost-efficient multi-barrier water management approach by building capacity.

Role of AIMEN:
- Development and implementation of a low-cost spectral photodetector for the quantification of organic compounds (as volatile fatty acids -VFA-) for insitu monitoring/control of anaerobic digestion (AD) reactors.
- Development and implementation of a cost-effective sensor for real time pathogen/microorganism detection and quantification in water samples.
- Optimization of anaerobic digestion reactors so as to increase their organic and hydraulic loading rates.
- Design and optimization of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment.
- Leader of the Public-private working group: platform together with the 4 Indian hosts, that will organize meetings every 6 months to learn among each other and advance in knowledge.
