RECOBATs aims to address the challenges of the transition to electric mobility, especially the increase in demand for batteries and strategic raw materials such as rare earth elements. These are essential for battery manufacturing due to their unique properties. Therefore, RECOBATs focuses on developing a comprehensive strategy for the second life and recycling of lithium-ion batteries at the end of their life cycle.
The project will investigate various technologies at all stages of the process, from logistics and transportation safety to deactivation, automatic disassembly, regeneration, and direct and indirect recycling of battery components. RECOBATs will not only boost the electromobility and renewable energy markets but also contribute to the recovery of critical metals, improve environmental sustainability, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions and landfill waste accumulation.
AIMEN's role will focus on three main tasks:
1. Develping a more efficient method for the diagnosis and determination of the health status of battery modules based on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
2. Using collaborative robotics and AI agents for the automatic disassembly of batteries.
3. Studying the reuse of various materials extracted from battery waste (graphite, Cu and Al powders) as additives to improve the properties of various 3D printing materials.
