Reversibly designed cross linked polymers

  • Start: 01/09/2022

REDONDO aims to improve the difficult-to-recycle PEX by achieving the production of rPEX (Reversibly cross-linked polyethylene). The proposed methodology will address the issue by making use of beyond state-of-the-art chemical compositions and processing techniques, aiming to achieve a fully reversible cross-linking process that will allow the creation of sustainable-by-design polymers, accomplishment of a fully circular material flow rPEX.
By utilizing novel technologies and innovative biobased/green additives, rPEX will obtain significant added value due to its inherent recyclability and its lower toxicity, compared to the use of traditional PVC-based polymeric materials as well as the use of expensive and nonrecyclable PEX.

PEX is a material of primary importance and value in the piping as well as in the cables industry. Various PEX products dominate the market promoting its improved properties and advantageous aspects compared with other, older, more traditional materials used in the respective end-use applications (e.g. PVC, copper, halogen-containing materials, etc).
AIMEN's role focuses on developing the rPEX production and recycling process. It is also involved in the definition of material sustainability criteria and material flow analysis along the value chain.
