Safe, sustainable, lIghtwEight and high-perfoRmance Ni-Rich NMC battery pack with Advanced cell-to-pack monitoring for decarbonising heavy-duty vehicles

  • Start: 01/06/2025
  • End: 31/05/2029

The European project SIERRA aims to develop an innovative battery pack for heavy-duty electric vehicles, based on Ni-rich NMC cells, that is safe, sustainable, lightweight, and high-performance. The solution will integrate recycled materials into the structural casings, advanced embedded sensor technologies for cell-to-pack monitoring, and design strategies aligned with the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approach.

The expected results include: significant weight and carbon footprint reduction of the battery system; over 50% recycled content in the casings; validation of the full system in a relevant environment; and development of exploitable technologies for sectors such as e-mobility, automotive, and energy.

AIMEN leads the development of multimaterial recycled casings using advanced moulding technologies. It is also involved in structural validation of prototypes, material characterization, industrial process scale-up, and functional integration of SHM sensors. AIMEN plays a key role in ensuring the structural performance, sustainability, and industrial scalability of this innovative solution.
