Robotized and autonomous system for the transport of palets

  • Start: 01/02/2014
  • End: 30/06/2015

The automation of logistics tasks in manufacturing processes has been a trend for the industry within the last years. However, even with this huge potential market in manufacturing, the automation of transport tasks in warehousing for autonomous vertical management had not yet success.
The continuous improvement and evolution of the sensing and control technologies used in autonomous mobile platforms, allows designing novel cost effective solutions that can be used at short and large scales. With the appearance of new control technologies for the design of automation systems it is possible to obtain integral logistics solutions under high quality standards.
The ShERPA project is intended to obtain a mobile platform with hybrid operational capabilities (manual and autonomous) to be used in warehouses logistics tasks, mainly reception and expedition of parts for the automotive sector. It is also important to note that this solution could be lately applied to other manufacturing sectors.
In order to reach the objectives defined, ShERPA make use of novel robotic technologies to develop the control system onboard the mobile platform and also communication technologies to vertically integrate the warehouse management system with the mobile platform control architecture. This allows an efficient handling of parts and the improvement on the traceability of the whole system.
