The main objective of the TANDEM project is to develop a 3D printing solution that allows the flexible, fast and cost-efficient manufacture of high-performance composite aeronautical components, by the development of a novel thermoplastic filament reinforced with continuous fiber, and the robotization of the process in a totally digitized environment. With this, it is intended to solve several of the needs of the aeronautical sector.
The main innovations that are presented in TANDEM are the development of a new thermoplastic composite material reinforced with continuous carbon fiber in filament format, a novel methodology of design and calculation of reinforced thermoplastic composites parts for 3D printing, that allows to develop the optimal design of the part for its manufacture by FDM, and an integral solution for 3D printing for thermoplastic composites.
To address the challenge, a consortium led by SOFITEC, an international 100% aerospace company, specialized in the manufacture of aerostructures in composite and metallic materials, together with two SMEs supplying the necessary technologies, has been consolidated. ROVIMÁTICA, as a technology-based SME specializing in the comprehensive development of robotic solutions, will serve as the basis in TANDEM for the development of a robotic cell for 3D printing of composite materials. SERTEC, a company with a long track record in the aeronautical sector, will develop the procedure, the calculation methodology and the simulation of the continuous fiber filament 3D printing process for aeronautical components.
Taking into account the high innovative character of TANDEM proposal, which contemplates in its work plan some very innovative tasks that require specific means and experience, the consortium have considered necessary the support of the AIMEN TECHNOLOGICAL CENTER, both for the development phase of new materials such as for the development of the printing cell.
