The aim of BIO + is to develop new technologies associated to the manufacture, operation and maintenance of biomass boilers for electricity generation in order to increase their efficiency.
The use of biomass as a renewable energy resource has not yet reached the levels of competitiveness of other resources as coal, oil or gas, due to its low calorific power and its high moisture and volatile contents. Therefore, the use of biomass presents ample scope of improvement in order to increase the plants profitability.
An increase of 5% efficiency implies an increment of Tª and superheated steam pressure up to values close to 550 °C and 130bar, respectively. These conditions, together with the combustion gases composition and inert dragging, result in erosion-corrosion phenomena on the superheater surfaces. The severity of these effects is aggravated under high efficiency conditions promoting unscheduled plant outages and maintenance costs. In this context, the development of technological solutions adapted to the new operating conditions results critical.
AIMEN proposes the development of new powder materials, metal cladding and manufacture and welding procedures, adapted to these conditions and particularly suitable for construction and repair works in the boiler. In addition, the integration of an on-line system for monitoring critical variables (corrosion and erosion rates and fouling) affecting the pipes integrity, allow displaying superheater degradation and facilitate the decision-making to avoid unnecessary stops of the plant.
