Development of advanced welding solutions of friction stir welding for shipbuilding industry

  • Start: 01/09/2013
  • End: 31/05/2015

The main objective of the F-SHIP project has been the development of a Friction Stir Welding prototype machine assisted with a preheating system by electromagnetic induction with capacity for welding shipbuilding steel plate.
So, it is to address a problem that is burdening the shipbuilding industry associated with the inefficiency of welding processes, the high distorsion degree and difficulty in securing and uniformity of joints quality of the ship plate panels for manufacturing hulls of ships.
To this end, It has assisted the FSW process with a technique of preheating the material so that when the tool is introduced into it, it has drastically reduced their elastic limit because the generated thermal field, significantly decreasing the implicit efforts in process and action on the tool wear, significantly increasing its durability and with it, the profitability of the process.
To validate and demonstrate the new process, It is manufactured a FSW prototype machine thermally assisted. AIMEN has actively participated in all tasks involved in defining the functional requirements and architecture of the prototype machine (FSW welding head, carrier machine, electromagnetic induction equipment, control systems, etc.).
