The main objective of METALPRINT project is to develop and optimize an indirect additive manufacturing system by combining Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) process and injection molding of metal powders (MIM), for metal parts manufacturing. In particular, this technology will be developed to manufacture copper inductors, because of its interest from a technical point of view and the great economic and industrial impact that these products generate. A biobased binder suitable for 3D printing of copper pieces will be developed. Therefore, the copper filament will be developed too, from which inducers will be obtained by 3D printing. A simple 3D-printing architecture will be used to obtain green parts in an economical way, to later extract the polymer from the piece ("brown part") and sintering it to obtain the final dimensions and density.
To address the challenge, a consortium led by MIM TECH ALFA, an innovative company focused on MIM process, has been consolidated. MATRIGALSA participates as the final user of the developed products, while AIMEN and the "Powder Technologies Group" of the Carlos III University of Madrid will contribute in the project with their experience in the development of high performance materials through additive manufacturing techniques and the development of new binder and feedstock systems for MIM, respectively.
