NAUTILUS is a collaborative project constituted between NAVANTIA S.A. and AIMEN, aiming twofold objective: 1) the development of Advanced Manufacturing Processes and, in particular, automated/robotic systems for pre-fabrication stages during shipbuilding; and 2) the development of added value solutions in the area of advanced materials for lightweighting, ballistics and protection against corrosion.
In this sense, 6 research lines have been defined in NAUTILUS:
• Robotization of welding operations in naval elements and structures
• Laser-hybrid technology for panel welding
• Automatic sheet forming by using induction heating
• New steel-composite systems for shipbuilding and repair
• New solutions for ballistics
• New advanced systems for cathodic protection
Thus, NAVANTIA will acquire the necessary capacities to: 1) increase the efficiency and productivity of its manufacturing process, with better quality and less operation costs, as critical aspects to increase its competitiveness in such a complex and global market; 2) improve the performance of military ships, increasing their functionalities and added value and differentiating NAVANTIA from its global competitors.
On the other hand, AIMEN intends to consolidate itself as a strategic technological partner for NAVANTIA in the development of new materials and manufacturing technologies, and also guarantee the transfer of the results obtained to other industrial sectors.
